Expectations of CASE partners

Financial contributions

Eligibility

  • Organisations eligible for funding from any UKRI Council (excluding Innovate UK) cannot act as a CASE partner
  • International CASE partners are eligible provided they are a non-academic organisation. The training grant holder must evidence that the CASE criteria has been met and that the placement provides an opportunity for the student to gain skills that could not be provided by a UK-based partner. The student must be fully supported by the landscape award partnership and CASE partner throughout the placement period
  • As an exception to the above, public sector research establishments (PSREs) are eligible to act as a CASE partner for BBSRC studentships.

CASE placement

  • All students spend a minimum of 3 months on a placement with the CASE partner. This 3 month period can be at any point during the studentship (subject to the timetable of the taught component in the first year) and may consist of a number of shorter visits if appropriate. BBSRC encourages placements of longer duration but up to a maximum of 18 months.
  • A CASE supervisor must be provided by the CASE partner.  They must meet the supervisor eligibility requirements of both the CASE partner and the registered university.
  • The placement should be directly related to the research project and, as such, should be developed in collaboration between the academic and non-academic partners, with input from the student.
  • In addition, to experience an industrial research environment, the student should receive business-related training, for example, in project-management, business strategy and finance.

IMPORTANT: Due to the truly collaborative and integrated nature of CASE, the studentship cannot be considered a true CASE studentship if, upon removal of input from the non-academic partner, the training and project could still continue.
