Overview of the different types of DTP studentships

Below are further details about the 3 different types of studentships available through the SWBio DTP:

  • Standard studentships
  • Standard studentships with Associate Partner
  • CASE studentships

Our partnership includes the following organisations:

  • Core partners: Universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter, and Rothamsted Research
  • Associate partners: Marine Biological Association (MBA), University of Plymouth, Swansea University, SETsquared Bristol, UCB Pharma (Slough), University of the West of England (UWE)

Rothamsted-based studentships: referred to as Rothamsted supervisor

Referred to as a lead supervisors; one lead supervisor based at a Core Partner + one lead supervisor based at an eligible Associate Partner

Project call (intake 2026) eligible Associate Partners: MBA, Plymouth, Swansea, UWE.  

Any Core Partner or UWE

 

 

Rothamsted-based studentships: referred to as Rothamsted supervisor

Eligible to act as second supervisor 

Any Core Partner or Associate Partner

Rothamsted-based studentships: only university Core Partner eligible to act as academic supervisor

Core Partner main supervisor: Any Core Partner or Associate Partner.

UWE main supervisor: Any Core Partner.

Rothamsted-based studentships: only university Core Partner or UWE eligible to act as academic supervisor

Further supervisory team guidance

If the main and second supervisors are from different institutions, a second local supervisor is needed from the main supervisor’s institution.

Rothamsted-based studentships: a second local Rothamsted and academic supervisor needed.

A second local supervisor is needed for each lead supervisor institution.

Two academic supervisors will be required if both lead supervisors are not based at a university.

A listed CASE supervisor needed.

If the main and second supervisors are from different institutions, a second local supervisor is needed from the main supervisor’s institution.

Rothamsted-based studentships: a second local Rothamsted and academic supervisor needed.

Our Associate Partners, UCB Pharma (Slough) + SETsquared Bristol organisations, can act as CASE partners.

50% at each of the lead supervisor institutions

UWE/Bristol collaborations: These students will be on a joint degree award.  This mean they will be fully registered at both UWE and Bristol, with Bristol taking the administrative lead.
