Overview of PIPS organisation
Tenovus Cancer Care is a leading cancer care charity in Wales, aiming to support the needs of people affected by cancer. We are particularly interested in tackling cancer inequalities.
Placement offered

In order to ensure that our services and political campaigning meets the needs of those affected by cancer in Wales today, it is important that we understand how different cancer types affect different communities within Wales. It is well known that deprivation can have a huge impact on cancer incidence, survival rates and mortality and we want to further explore this. We are particularly interested in understanding how deprivation impacts the less-survivable cancers. We have previously had a PIPS placement student who explored the relationship between deprivation and lung cancer using publicly available data as a well as freedom of information requests, which enabled us to publish a report which we are currently using to help influence the decision on the implementation of lung cancer screening.

As a placement student you would be supported in finding Wales specific data on a less-survivable cancer of interest to produce a report on its relationship with deprivation. You will be given guidance and support in researching data, statistical analysis (if required) and report writing. You will gain an insight into the working of a third sector organisation and your report could help make a real difference to the lives of those affected by cancer.

Financial contribution/benefit(s)
Tenovus Cancer Care will pay for travel expenses, as well as publication and dissemination of the report.
